Building trust and momentum for credible soil carbon farming
What is Carbon Farming?
Carbon Farming in simple words....
Carbon farming is a framework to compensate farmers for managing the land so it captures and stores carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the atmosphere. Plants absorb CO₂ as they grow, and by following certain practices (i.e. cover crops, reducing tillage, etc.) enhance soil health by enforcing carbon sequestration in the soil or/and vegetation instead of releasing it back into the atmosphere.
The sustainability criteria define the minimum requirements that carbon removals must meet. These are guided by a set of sustainability objectives, which mandate that carbon removals should have at least a neutral impact or deliver additional co-benefits. The objectives encompass contributing to climate change mitigation beyond net carbon removal, enhancing climate resilience, and supporting the sustainable use and protection of water and marine resources. They also promote the shift to a circular economy, pollution prevention and control, and the conservation and restoration of biodiversity and ecosystems.
Why is it important?
Carbon farming plays a vital role in addressing the current climate crisis by promoting carbon sequestration.
Storing carbon in soils and plants can provide several benefits:
- Climate Action: It reduces greenhouse gases at farm level and contributes to global efforts for slowing climate change.
- Healthier Soils: Practices like cover cropping and reduced tillage can prevent erosion and improve soil fertility, making the farm less dependent on chemical inputs.
- Biodiversity: Encouraging natural habitats and sustainable farming practices can support wildlife and beneficial ecosystems dynamics.
- Economic Opportunities: Farmers can earn income by participating in carbon markets, selling credits for the carbon they store.
- Resilience: Healthier soils hold water better, making farms more resilient to droughts and floods and floods.
Credible’s contribution
CREDIBLE platform contributes to carbon farming by building trust, transparency, and collaboration to accelerate its adoption in the EU.
Facilitating Discussions
Experts and stakeholders come together to address key challenges in carbon farming, focusing on which practices work, how to standardize them, and how to monitor progress effectively.
Knowledge Sharing
Through practical, region-specific blueprints practitioners can develop carbon farming schemes, ensuring they align with environmental goals while balancing food security and biodiversity.
Defining Standards
Current carbon farming standards and certification methods are investigated for helping shape trusted carbon markets and policies are further explored to ensure environmental integrity.
Improving Monitoring
Through focusing on enhancing soil carbon monitoring systems across the EU and promoting cost-effective and harmonized data collection methods.
Hosting Summits
Annual European Carbon Farming Summits create a space for scientific, policy, and market discussions, evolving from technical meetings into broader events that influence policy and business innovation
Providing Insights
Through its Focus Groups, CREDIBLE platform identifies key messages, opportunities, and challenges, sharing these with stakeholders and inviting feedback to refine strategies.
In essence, CREDIBLE platform acts as a unifying force, providing simple, clear, and accessible guidance that doesn’t require specialized knowledge to turn into actionable insights, always prioritizing the needs and perspectives of the carbon farming practitioner.
How the CREDIBLE network can benefit from carbon farming
At the heart of CREDIBLE platform is its vibrant community of stakeholders, each playing a critical role in advancing carbon farming across the EU. Among these, the primary users of the knowledge and means provided through the platform - local government administrators, farmers, agronomists, food manufacturers and the scientific community- are central to the project’s focus.
Local Government Administrators
Local government administrators benefit from CREDIBLE’s platform clear and actionable insights that help them design policies and projects that promote sustainability and economic growth. By engaging with the project’s network and resources, they can assist in the implementation of region-specific carbon farming initiatives that balance environmental integrity with local development needs, fostering trust and collaboration within their communities.
Farmers
Farmers are at the core of carbon farming practices, and CREDIBLE platform provides them with practical, easy-to-implement guidelines tailored to their regions. These resources enable farmers to enhance soil health, improve yields, and gain access to carbon markets, creating new revenue opportunities. Carbon farming strengthens their resilience to climate change, ensuring long-term agricultural sustainability.
Agronomists
Agronomists play a vital intermediary role by translating the available methodologies and frameworks into actionable advice for farmers and local governments. With access to standardized tools, transparent data, and monitoring capabilities, agronomists are equipped to guide their clients confidently toward adopting sustainable and profitable carbon farming practices.
Food Manufacturers
Food companies rely on their supply chain for healthy produce, and have a strong influence on how crops are farmed. It is in their own interest to take actions for reducing their carbon footprint and promote sustainability across the value chain. The platform can provide them with a clear framework to develop concrete approaches to reduce scope 3 emissions and increase carbon capture, identifying implementation pathways that are tailored to the contexts where food is produced.
Others
Additionally, researchers and technical experts gain a platform for advancing scientific understanding and enhancing monitoring technologies, while business innovators and technology providers find clear pathways for developing new solutions aligned with harmonized standards. Finally, environmental organizations can engage with the project to explore the broader ecosystem benefits of carbon farming, such as improved biodiversity and water management.
Scientific Community
Researchers and experts can access a platform for advancing scientific understanding and enhancing monitoring technologies, while business innovators and technology providers find clear pathways for developing new solutions aligned with harmonized standards. At the same time, environmental organizations can exert a quality check, ensuring that carbon farming methodologies are sound and deliver on biodiversity, water, and social improvements.
Simplicity: the key to uptake of carbon farming
We recognize that the successful adoption of carbon farming relies on making it accessible to everyone, including those who may not have the technical knowledge to design and implement carbon farming schemes. That’s why everything provided in the CREDIBLE platform is simplified, practical, and easy to understand. From guidelines on best practices to tools for monitoring soil carbon, we ensure that even complex processes are broken down into actionable steps that anyone can follow.
Beyond providing clear resources, CREDIBLE platform fosters a supportive community where stakeholders can collaborate and learn from each other. Governmental administrators, farmers, agronomists, food manufacturers, scientists and other stakeholders bring their unique perspectives and experiences, creating a vibrant exchange of knowledge.
Key steps for developing carbon farming schemes are offered through CREDIBLE platform, covering everything from selecting the most suitable practices for a region to navigating standards and monitoring requirements. These resources will act as a roadmap, empowering users to confidently take action while aligning with broader sustainability goals. With simplicity at its core, we ensure that carbon farming is not just an aspiration but a practical reality for all.
