Carbon Farming for Nature, Communities, and Climate

The Farm:Carbon programme is a pilot agri-environmental research initiative designed to implement a results-based approach that enhances farmers’ incomes by rewarding improvements in the environmental services provided by their land, particularly on agricultural peatlands. Running from 2021 to 2023, the project is co-funded by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and the European Union.

Eligible farmers with peat soils located near the Camcor, Little Brosna, and Silver River catchments can receive a mix of action-based and results-based payments to mitigate the environmental impacts of peatland farming. These measures, developed collaboratively with various project partners, aim to both diversify farm income and support ecological restoration. The project focuses on two key objectives: adapting proven strategies to tackle biodiversity loss, greenhouse gas emissions, and water pollution, and testing innovative regenerative farming methods that deliver lasting environmental and economic benefits.
